Why a Proper Fit Matters More Than Size
Most people think alterations are only for special occasions — a wedding dress, a prom gown, a suit for a big event. But some of the most rewarding work we do is far simpler: taking a blouse, shirt, or dress that almost fits, and making it actually fit.
Why Off-the-Rack Doesn’t Fit Everyone
Clothing sizes are built around averages — not your actual body. That’s why a blouse can be the “right” size on the tag and still hang wrong: loose through the waist, tight across the shoulders, or shapeless in a way that hides the garment’s real design.
This piece is a good example. The blouse itself was beautiful — delicate eyelet lace trim, soft cotton, a classic button front — but the waist sat loose and shapeless on the body, hiding the very details that made it special.
What a Proper Fitting Involves
A properly fitted garment doesn’t just look better — it moves better, feels more comfortable, and lets the fabric and craftsmanship actually show. Fitting work like this typically involves:
Nipping in the side seams and waist panel to follow the body’s natural shape
Working carefully around delicate trims, lace, or existing stitching so nothing is disturbed
Fitting the garment on the body or on a form, pinning and checking before a single final seam is sewn
Rechecking the fit at least once before final pressing and finishing
It’s precise, patient work — small changes that add up to a completely different result.
Before & After: A Real Example
In this case, adjustments to the waistline and side seams gave the blouse a fitted silhouette that follows the body’s natural curve, while keeping every bit of the original lace detailing intact. The result is a garment that finally looks the way it was designed to.
When to Consider a Fitting
If you have pieces at home that never quite fit right — a blouse, a dress, even a blazer — it’s often a much smaller fix than people expect. Common signs a garment needs fitting:
Gapping or pulling at the button front
Loose or shapeless through the waist
Shoulders or sleeves that sit slightly wrong
A garment that looked great on the hanger but not on you
A simple fitting can completely change how a garment wears — often for less time and cost than people assume.
